New Minas Elementary
School Information

New Minas Elementary School is a Grade Primary to Grade Five elementary school located in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. There are approximately 365 students enrolled at the school.

We begin our day each morning at 8:30 am and dismiss at 2:20 pm. The day consists of a variety of classroom learning experiences at each grade level. Students also participate in Physical Education and Music classes instructed by specialist teachers. Approximately 160 of our students from Grades primary through five are enrolled in the French Immersion Program. All other students begin French instruction at the grade 4 level.

NMES is a member of the League of Peaceful Schools. Our students, staff and school community promote non-violent conflict resolution. Through classroom instruction, bi-weekly assemblies, bi-weekly Peace Groups, etc. our students develop non-violent skills and values such as empathy, respect, courtesy, etc.

Our students participate in a number of extra-curricular programs and activities. These include: a Skating Program, Cross-Country Running, Senior and Junior Choirs, Music Intra-murals, Phys. ED. Intramurals, a Grade 5 Dance Club, Indoor Soccer Programs, Peer Mediators, a KATS Team (Kids Against Tobacco Smoke), and a PALS Group (Physically Active Leadership Students.)

Some special events at our school include: a Welcome-back Corn Boil, a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Christmas and Spring Concerts, a Christmas Shopping Party, a School Musical, a Dance Festival, a Family Dance and our Fun-fair.

NMES depends on the kindness and hard work of our parents and community members. They help out with a number of our programs and fundraisers. One of our most important programs operated by volunteers and staff is our Breakfast Program. Through generous donations by the community as well as hard work by our parent-volunteers and a staff member, we are able to offer a nutritional breakfast to students who are interested each and every morning.

Our PTA executive is very active and dedicated in all aspects of the school. Their tireless contributions help to ensure both an effective and successful learning environment for all students. Their efforts are essential to the success of our school.
